To All the Boys I've Loved Before Review

Susan Johnson's new Netflix Teen High School romantic drama film 'To All the Boys I Loved Before' is based on Jenny Han's 2014 young adult novel, and while the plot is set well on a premise that fans style the genre adequately.

To be exciting, the film feels that the very premise has to be eliminated. In a way, the film deceives us into believing that it has more content than it actually did, and to not let this feeling subside, I might have enjoyed the film a bit more than I did Because all is said and done, it works - in parts.

Lara Jean Song Cove is a sixteen-year-old half-Korean half-Caucasian girl living and studying in an unnamed city in the United States. At the beginning of the film, we learn that her mother has passed away several years ago and that she and her two sisters - one older and the other younger than her - were raised by her gynecologist father.

Lara Jean is very close to her two sisters, and when the elder Margot leaves for college after dumping her boyfriend Josh, Lara Jean is confused about her own feelings for Josh, whom he once had a crush on Was. But, as it turns out, Josh is not the only boy he had a crush on - and also that he had, in fact, five of them in years.

A quiet girl with self-esteem issues, Lara Jean could never tell any of these five boys that she loves them, and to air her feelings, she gave each of them a chance Wrote a letter at different stages of life, how he felt about them. Naturally, she never posted these letters, and they were safely kept in her personal chest.

One day, her younger sister Kitty makes the devastating mistake of posting all five letters, and Lara Jean now suddenly finds herself in the spotlight, trying to get the attention and feel of the newly-mouthed five-plus boys For the first time in her life, that she was not quite as invisible as she thought she was.

While the plot is promising, the film doesn't quite deliver, due to the proportionate amount of time it spends finding that one of Lara Jean's former crushes gets the letter she gave him. Wrote years ago. This guy - Peter Kavinsky - who is currently struggling to save his own relationship with Lara Jean's former best friend, uses her as a green-eyed proxy to get back with his girlfriend is. And for some strange and inexplicable reason, Lara Jean agrees to move forward with this strange plan.

Though the plan seems to work, it only seems that way because, so far, Peter Kavinsky has speculated on the heels in love with Lord Jean's simple charm.

While there is a high amount of immaturity in the plot here, I must admit that the play has some poignant moments of juvenile romance blossoming.

And more than anyone, the credit goes to the young actor Noah Santino, who plays more than maturity with Peter Kavinsky, perhaps more than the film's producers had ever expected of him. In at least two scenes - one in which he speaks about his enchanted father, and another in which he falls short of confessing his love for Lara Jean - Santino manages to make me sit up and notice him. The child encounters a dependable attraction, and I set out on a limb to say that if he chooses his projects carefully, he has a bright future ahead.

Lana Condor plays the role of Lara Jean with enough sense of her character to let you know her acting. Immaculate in the way I usually see her films, I was very interested to know what she felt despite the many flaws in the story. She has the presence of a certain 'every-girl', and along with her younger sister (superbly acted by Anna Cathcart) and her best friend (Medellin Arthur in the role of show-stealing), she is a role model for the soul.

Creates a bond — the gratitude that is far more precious than any crush on the face of the earth. It is this vibrancy - that he is quite good with whatever is lacking, seeks all the usual attitudes a girl of his age has, and aspires for - that candor beautifully brings forth through his performance.

What I didn't like about the film is that the only focus of the story seems to be on one boy - and not five, as the film's promos promised. You can appreciate the feeling of dissatisfaction I must have felt as the plot was thus stripped of all its magnificent possibilities and complexities. But if you're ready to ignore that dreadful feeling, then you can enjoy this high-school romance.

'To the All the Boys I Loved Before' is currently streaming on Netflix.
